The bond between a family and the school that their child attends is a significant product to certain the growth of their child's schooling. By allowing the parent into the classroom helps the parent to better understand their child. Sometimes when a parent has been out of school for a long period of time they forget how hard school can be. But allowing the parent inside the classroom again they begin to remember more about the school's academic program and how it works (n.d). This allows a good connection to be made with the parent and the child, allowing them to bond and connect with the child's schooling. Sometimes parents feel that they are useless and they leave the education all up to the teacher. But by allowing a good connection between home and school the child will start to feel safer at school. It is important to keep a good relationship between the child's school life and home life because a strained "home-school relations may result in or contribute to low student performance" (Edutopia.).
Not only is it important for teachers to create a bond with the student's parents to benefits the parent but this also benefits the child, more importantly, the child's safety. Teachers learn a lot about their students by having more knowledge about the structure of that student's home life. Many times "Home-life challenges are often hidden at the schoolhouse door, and they impact students at every economic level and regardless of academic capital and previous achievement" (Abowd 2015). The home life of a child can very much impact their school life. If the child is not receiving the basic needs necessary at home, such as food, clean water, and love their education is at a huge risk. A child will never be able to retain the proper education if they are in a constant battle at home. School can already be stressful enough for students. By having their home life be just as bad or even worse there is no chance for that child to achieve susses at school. The teacher needs to keep their tabs on their student's home life. This can include calling parents and or having parent-teacher conferences. These conferences can help the teacher have a better view of their student's home and what they go to after leaving school. If a teacher has a bad feeling about a parent and they feel that their student is at risk of danger it is the teacher's job to inform the board of education or even Child Protective Services.
After viewing the 5-minute Film Festival Video "Parent-Teacher Partnerships.", It is very visible that allowing the parent to be more active within the student's education can be beneficial for the student's learning. It is important to remember that parents are also human, they are not perfect. This program was able to give the student's parents strong confidence that they obtain the ability to help their child learn and grow. This bond a child and parent can grow is so important not only for the parent but for the child too. Children copy their parents and when they see their parents thrive they also thrive. The child will begin to feel like they are not alone and they have help all around them. School can be hard on the child not just physically but emotionally as well. When the child begins to feel safe at home to talk to their parents and ask for help when needed, the emotional stress school can sometimes be placed upon students slowly goes away. The pressures that students carry slowly get lighter when they have more people to hold that pressure with. As I continued to watch the video it was clearly obvious that students began to become more engaged with their school work. Not only does allowing the parents to become more involved with the classroom help the student but it also helps the teacher. Students are not the only ones that have to carry a lot of pressure. Teachers have to make sure that every student they have is being taken care of and that they are actually learning all the material being taught.
In correlation to our articles and the School Violence workshop, it was emphasized that it is vastly important that future educators are alert for any significant indicators that a child might be perhaps trapped in a toxic and abusive household. There are key factors to figure out if a student is in need of help by spotting any physical damages on the child in the classroom. These could be bruises, scraps, and red marks placed upon the child. It is the teacher's responsibility to have an open eye on their student's differences in behaviors because a simple cry for help from a student can be silent and hard to detect. Noticing things such as lack of attendance in students and lack of focus could be key factors in helping a student before it is too late. Very few kids will ever be vocal about crying out for help. So it is important for teachers to keep an extra eye out because if not discovered as soon as possible, these factors can significantly impact the student's schooling or even more importantly, the child's health. Keeping in contact with the student's families can also be another way to make sure a student is safe once they leave the classroom. A teacher can only do so much to keep the child safe within the classroom but once they leave school property it is not the role of the parent to keep the child safe.
